The Digimon Sovereigns (四聖獣 Shiseijū?, lit. "Four Holy Beasts"), known as the "Harmonious Ones" in the Digimon Adventure series, are a group of four Mega-level Holy Beast Digimon that are derived from the Japanese myth of the Four Guardian Spirits of Kyoto, itself derived from the Chinese myth of the Four Symbols. Like the Guardian Spirits, they represent and rule over the cardinal points of the compass — Ebonwumon for the north, Zhuqiaomon for the south, Azulongmon for the east, and Baihumon for the west. They are led by Huanglongmon, who represents and is enshrined in the "Center", from which he supervises the others. In turn, each of the four main Sovereigns has three Deva as subordinates.

Due to Lucemon, Huanglongmon was sealed in the deepest, darkest place within the earth. This caused the Sovereigns to lose their rule and struggle for hegemony, but an equilibrium was established that is still maintained.[1] The Sovereigns have reigned over and protected the Digital World since the age of myth, and have passed into legend as beings which are extremely difficult to track down.[2] They are difficult to overthrow with the power of ordinary Mega Digimon, as their power is set as the highest authority among other Digimon, with strength that is said to be the epitome of gods.[3] Unlike normal Digimon which only have one DigiCore per body, each of the Sovereigns has twelve DigiCores which float outside their body and channel their immortality and tremendous power.[4] Except for Huanglongmon, who has eight, each of the Sovereigns also has four red, shining eyes.[5]

While the Chinese names for the guardian spirits were used for the Digimon themselves, as well as in Digimon World 3 for the four cities at the cardinal points of the map of the Amaterasu Server, their Japanese names were used for the respective four cities of the Asuka Server.

Fiction

Digimon Adventure 02 / Digimon Adventure tri.

Due to the Digivolution happening offscreen, it is uncertain which of Hippogriffomon, LoaderLiomon, and Triceramon digivolved to Azulongmon, Baihumon, and Zhuqiaomon. For simplicity, this wiki assumes that the avian, Bird-species Hippogriffomon digivolved to Zhuqiaomon, the feline, Machine-species LoaderLiomon digivolved to Baihumon, and the reptilian, Dragon-species Triceramon digivolved to Azulongmon.

The Harmonious Ones were the Partner Digimon of four of the original DigiDestined. They digivolved from their Ultimate forms in a climatic battle with the Dark Masters, and sacrificed their comrade, Megadramon to turn him into an attack that defeated the evil quartet, rendering Megadramon himself incapable of becoming a Digi-Egg. Loss

At some point after that, they became the guardians of the four compass points of the Digital World, preserving its balance. Azulongmon is the guardian of the Eastern Digital World. Kyoto Dragon

Before the next group of DigiDestined arrived in the Digital World, the four Harmonious Ones were defeated and sealed away by each of the Dark Masters. Following the defeat of the Dark Masters at the hands of the DigiDestined, the Sovereigns were still trapped beneath the seal. In order to break the seal, they took the power from the DigiDestined's Crests. The Crest of Light and Hope respectively broke Azulongmon's seal, Courage and Friendship unsealed one of the four seals, Sincerity and Love released another seal, and finally Knowledge and Reliability broke the last seal. Kyoto Dragon Unfortunately, using the Crests in this way meant that the eight children's Digimon could no longer digivolve to Ultimate or Mega. Fusion Confusion

Shortly afterward, the Four Harmonious Ones organize the "D-1 Tournament", and one of them, determined by how he answers the entry quiz, draws Ryo Akiyama into the Digital World. The tournament's stated goal was to choose a Tamer to take down the other three Harmonious Ones, who are claimed to have gone rogue, but Ryo and the other DigiDestined eventually discover that this was merely a ruse to train Ryo for a battle against Moon=Millenniummon, revived from Millenniummon. Digimon Adventure 02: D-1 Tamers

Despite participating in the D-1 Tournament, and even speaking personally with the Four Harmonious Ones, Gennai later claims that the only member he is aware of is Azulongmon.[citation needed]

Later, the Harmonious Ones were imprisoned once again because of the influence of the Control Spires. When Ken Ichijouji brings his Dark D-3 into the Digital World, they are able to find new Digimon who have the ancient power to armor digivolve, thus bypassing the evil powers of the Control Spires that prevent Digimon from using regular Digivolution. The Sovereigns then create the D-3s for three new DigiDestined and select Digimon that have the power to armor digivolve, who they seal underneath the Digi-Eggs; Gatomon and Patamon, already partnered to a DigiDestined are also found to be capable of Armor Digivolution, although Gatomon is required to lose her Holy Ring first. The Crest of Kindness is hidden from Ken by the powers of darkness, so it is necessary for the Harmonious Ones to rebuild it into the Digi-Egg of Miracles. Kyoto Dragon

Ebonwumon

Ebonwumon was originally an Orochimon partnered to one of the original DigiDestined, and digivolved in a climactic battle against the Dark Masters, Loss only to later be defeated and imprisoned by them in turn. He was released when the DigiDestined used the powers of their Crests. Kyoto Dragon Ebonwumon then helps set up the rigged D-1 Tournament to train Ryo to fight Moon=Millenniummon, but is re-imprisoned when Ken Ichijouji becomes the Digimon Emperor. They then create the D-3 and gave it to the new DigiDestined to fight against Ken.

Zhuqiaomon

Zhuqiaomon was originally a Hippogriffomon partnered to one of the original DigiDestined, and digivolved in a climactic battle against the Dark Masters, Loss only to later be defeated and imprisoned by them in turn. He was released when the DigiDestined used the powers of their Crests. Kyoto Dragon Zhuqiaomon then helps set up the rigged D-1 Tournament to train Ryo to fight Moon=Millenniummon, but is re-imprisoned when Ken Ichijouji becomes the Digimon Emperor. They then create the D-3 and gave it to the new DigiDestined to fight against Ken.

Azulongmon

Azulongmon was originally a Triceramon partnered to one of the original DigiDestined, and digivolved in a climactic battle against the Dark Masters, Loss only to later be defeated and imprisoned by them in turn. He was released when the DigiDestined used the powers of their Crests. Azulongmon himself was freed by the Crests of Hope and Light, as he would later reveal to BlackWarGreymon and the DigiDestined. Kyoto Dragon Azulongmon then helps set up the rigged D-1 Tournament to train Ryo to fight Moon=Millenniummon, D-1 Tamers but is re-imprisoned when Ken Ichijouji becomes the Digimon Emperor. They then create the D-3 and gave it to the new DigiDestined to fight against Ken.

After rejecting Arukenimon's control, BlackWarGreymon becomes driven to destroy the Destiny Stones that preserve balance in the Digital World, as each time a Stone is destroyed an apparition of Azulongmon appears, writhing in pain. After BlackWarGreymon sees Azulongmon appear, he decides that he is a worthy opponent and that he will continue to destroy the stones in search of him. Ultimately, Azulongmon is freed when the DigiDestined uses their D-3s to move the final Destiny Stone, causing him to appear. After Azulongmon dispatches BlackWarGreymon, he passes on his knowledge of the past to the DigiDestined, plants his Seeds of Light (seeds that will sprout and take on the same purpose as the Destiny Stones) in place of the destroyed Destiny Stones, and leaves. Later, Azulongmon gives the DigiDestined one of his twelve DigiCores through Gennai. The power of the DigiCore allows the original DigiDestined's Digimon to digivolve into their Ultimate forms again, and for Paildramon to mega digivolve to Imperialdramon Dragon Mode. Dramon Power Azulongmon later gives Taichi "Tai" Kamiya and Agumon more power, allowing Agumon to once again warp digivolve to his Mega form, WarGreymon, so he can fend off his doppelganger, BlackWarGreymon. Duel of the WarGreymon

Another DigiCore is used in New York, America to let Palmon digivolve to Lillymon. It also gives Veemon and Betamon energy to digivolve into ExVeemon and Seadramon respectively. Whether it is the same DigiCore or a different one is unknown. Digimon World Tour, Pt. 1

It is also suggested that BlackWarGreymon got to the human world inadvertently because of Azulongmon. Agumon explains that, when Azulongmon gave the DigiDestined the power to fight in the Real World by use of the DigiCore, the Digital World's defenses were weakened, meaning that not much was able to stand in the way of BlackWarGreymon. Duel of the WarGreymon

Azulongmon has a witty personality in the English dub, while in the original Japanese he is depicted as very serious and no-nonsense.

Baihumon

Baihumon was originally a LoaderLiomon partnered to Daigo Nishijima, and digivolved in a climactic battle against the Dark Masters, Loss only to later be defeated and imprisoned by them in turn. He was released when the DigiDestined used the powers of their Crests. Kyoto Dragon Baihumon then helps set up the rigged D-1 Tournament to train Ryo to fight Moon=Millenniummon, but is re-imprisoned when Ken Ichijouji becomes the Digimon Emperor. They then create the D-3 and gave it to the new DigiDestined to fight against Ken.

Digimon Tamers

The Digimon Sovereigns live on the sixth, deepest plain of the Digital World, along with the Catalyst, or Shining Digivolution. They were some of the first Digimon to reach their highest form, and in an attempt to distance themselves from humans, they ironically took the appearance of the humans' gods.

When the D-Reaper begins to re-emerge, the four Sovereigns cannot agree on a strategy. Zhuqiaomon believes that they should use the Shining Digivolution to allow Digimon to digivolve and fight back, while Azulongmon believes that it is the Digimon's ability to grow in strength that brought the D-Reaper out in the first place. He has the DigiGnomes transform the Shining Digivolution into Calumon. Azulongmon Explains It All

With the loss of the power to digivolve, Zhuqiaomon, thinking that the Digimon can instead grow stronger by defeating humanity, send his Deva into the Real World. Soon, his servant Makuramon discovers Calumon and attempts to return him to Zhuqiaomon, causing the Tamers to follow him in an attempt to rescue their friend. A World Apart Makuramon, however, loses Calumon, and the Tamers find him, but Caturamon recaptures him. The Imperfect Storm

After being separated, and a long, difficult trek across the Digital World, the Tamers arrive at Zhuqiaomon's domain. As they battle him, Azulongmon makes his appearance. Azulongmon Explains It All Meanwhile, Ryo Akiyama encounters Ebonwumon and Baihumon in the latter's domain, Song of Sakuyamon and soon, they all gather in Zhuqiaomon's area, just as the D-Reaper begins to make its appearance.

Here, a compromise is made, and the Sovereigns implore Calumon to release his power so Digimon can digivolve and fight back. Thus, it is Zhuqiaomon's plan that prevails in the end, even though that does not excuse his methods in attacking the Tamers. The Sovereigns lead their new army of Mega Digimon to fight the D-Reaper in the Digital World. Janyu's Ark Later, they travel to the Real World and help the Tamers by dragging the Cable Reaper back into the Digital World during Operation: Doodlebug, removing it from the battle. Kazu's Upgrade When Antylamon becomes Suzie Wong's partner, Zhuqiaomon's power dedigivolves her into Lopmon. Rabbit Transit During the battle between Beelzemon and Gallantmon, he sends Caturamon to destroy Lopmon. Gallantmon destroys Caturamon, whose data Beelzemon absorbs. The Battle Within

When the Tamers finally confront Zhuqiaomon, he inflicts severe damage to Rapidmon before Henry Wong and Terriermon biomerge to MegaGargomon and defeat him. No Mon Is an Island Zhuqiaomon, who the Tamers think is destroyed, emerges and then battles Gallantmon until the Eastern Guardian Azulongmon appears and stops the battle.
