Episode recap for The Insect Master's Trap.

Synopsis[]

The DigiDestined resume their mission to destroy the remaining Control Spires in the Digital World, making more progress each passing day, with Ken and Wormmon also joining the mission, albeit separately. During an evening break after another successful day, the Digimon partners begin to ask DemiVeemon about his experience in DNA Digivolution, and he replies with great enthusiasm. Davis also adds that during the process, he also felt spiritually connected with Ken, as if their hearts were beating at the same time. Hearing his statement, Kari expresses her feeling about the mysterious nature of this new form of Digivolution and how many possibilities it can bring to their team, though Cody still remains unsure out of fear that the process might be harmful to their Digimon partners.

Meanwhile, Ken and Wormmon continue to destroy the spires late into the night, with Ken worrying about the possible side effects of DNA Digivolution should he have to battle alongside Davis and the rest again, but is dismissed by Wormmon who questions whether Ken is actually using it as an excuse due to him having yet to open his heart to the others. The duo decide to put the discussion on hold for the time being, and return to the Real World, not wanting to risk Ken's parents worrying about him any further.

The mysterious woman soon catches up with the Digidestined's plan to destroy all the Control Spires. After watching the tape recorder left by the kids and angry toward them for calling her "some kind of witch", the woman decides to cut to the chase, and sends out a message to the DigiDestined with an invitation to settle things at the Giga House. Though the kids are sceptical about accepting such a suspicious invitation, they decide to comply as they would have to face the woman sooner or later anyway, and this might be their best chance to stop her.

The DigiDestined arrive at the Giga House and are soon joined by Ken and Wormmon who are against the entire team heading inside, knowing that the whole thing is a trap set up by the woman. Though agreeing with him, Yolei also expresses the necessity to confront the woman and put an end to her plan. Hearing this, T.K. comes up with a compromise: dividing the team into two groups, the first group, consisting of Davis, Ken, Cody, and their partners, will head inside the house to confront the woman, while the second group, consisting of T.K. and the rest, will remain on standby outside and rush in as reinforcements if necessary. The mysterious woman, who has been spying on the kids from the roof through her telescope, laughs at the kids' stupidity for walking into her trap and gleefully runs off to prepare "a few surprises" for her guests.

Davis' group heads inside through the kitchen's window and is attacked by an army of Roachmon. Veemon, Armadillmon, and Wormmon Digivolve to their Champion forms to fight them off, but are soon forced to flee due to being outnumbered. At the same time, an army of Flymon and Snimon chases T.K.'s group, and they're also forced to flee inside the Giga House, alerting them that something is wrong with this swarm of Insect Digimon.

In the bathroom, Davis' group is able to throw off the Roachmon, with Exveemon using the shower head to wash them down the drain, but are soon attacked by an army of Kunemon, causing Ken and Stingmon to fall into the washing machine. With quick thinking, Cody saves the two from drowning with Submarimon and drives away the Kunemon, and the group flees into the air vent. Meanwhile, Yolei and Aquilamon decide to separate from T.K and the rest to search for Davis' group, as the six of them cannot fight through the army of Insect Digimon by themselves.

Inside the air vent, Ken thanks Cody for his help, but Cody says he was just paying back Ken's help during the Thundermon Incident. On the other side of the house, T.K., Pegasusmon, Kari, and Nefertimon escape the Snimon into an office with a gigantic computer and set up a defensive stance.

Back in the air vent, Davis' group hears sound coming from the attic and follows it, eventually coming face to face with the mysterious woman, playing a flute. Though unimpressed at the kids' "lack of manners", the woman answers the kids' desire to put an end to her terror by controlling Stingmon with the sound of her flute and forcing him to fight against Exveemon before they can DNA Digivolve. Knowing that they're at a disadvantage as long as Stingmon is under the woman's control, Cody has Armadillomon Armor Digivolve to Digmon to take back the flute. Unfortunately for Cody, Digmon is also ensorcelled by the woman as he and Ken realize that her flute has the power to control all the Insect-type Digimon in the vicinity, including all the swarms of Insect Digimon they had battled so far, with the woman gloating at the kids that there is nothing they can do to stop her.

Around the same time, Yolei and Aquilamon still have no luck in finding anyone else, while the horde of Snimon finally break into the office where T.K. and the rest are hiding.

Now in complete control of the situation, the woman orders Digmon to finish Davis, Ken, and Cody off by drilling into the floor, causing the three to fall into a web on the ceiling of the bedroom where Dokugumon awaits, ready to dispose of them at her command. Davis' team is now truly in a sticky situation, and must find a way to escape it before Dokugumon spells their doom.

Quotes[]

"Whoever destroys the most control spires gets to go on a date with me! By the way, Kari's the only one eligible!"

Davis motivates the group in his own, ineffective way.

"I'm telling you, just when we think we've got this whole digivolution thing figured out, something new pops up. But this is the craziest thing we've seen yet."

Kari, reflecting on her experience with digivolving.

Ken: "I gotta get home. My parents must be worried sick about me. They probably think I've disappeared again. Hurry up, Wormmon. It's getting dark, and I don't want to be a digi-delicacy for some forest creature."
Wormmon: "W-w-wait for me!"
Ken: "It's amazing how fast you can move when you have the right motivation."

—Ken and Wormmon, after having lost track of time.

Cody: "I wonder where that creepy woman is hiding."
Mysterious Woman: *growl*
T.K.: "Good work. We smashed all of the Control Spires in this area.
Mysterious Woman: *snarl* "Be quiet!! How dare you talk about me like I'm some kind of witch! I dress this way to make a fashion statement!"

—The Mysterious Woman, angry with the kid's critique regarding her outfit, kicks the TV she's watching.

Davis: "It reminds me of this book called Gulliver's Travels. It's about this kid who sells an old cow for some magic beans and ends up fighting this giant."
Cody: "Nuh-uh! That's Jack and the Beanstalk, silly!"

—Davis mistakes the plot of a fairytale with that of a classic novel.

Davis:"Ken, please tell me that's a Digimon friend of yours we've never met before and not a big ravenous spider!"
Ken:"Sorry, Davis!"
Mysterious Woman:"Meet Dokugumon, and she's hungry!"

Davis, Ken, and Cody find themselves in a sticky situation.

Other notes[]

Continuity errors

  • In the English dub, when the group are escaping the Flymon, Yolei asks Aquilamon who they are, despite having battled one in an earlier episode, Storm Of Friendship.
  • In the English dub, Davis calls Arukenimon by name multiple times, despite the fact that they do not find out who she is until the next episode.

Animation errors

  • In the shot of ExVeemon DNA digivolving with Aquilamon and Ankylomon, ExVeemon's hands have five fingers instead of three.
  • In the front shot of Davis's group when finding Arukenimon, the pale blue upper section of Davis's jacket is the same color as his hair.

Dubbing changes

  • Following the original airing, all shots of the Digimon destroying control spires are removed from the English dub except ExVeemon.
  • When Arukenimon is planning her scheme, she subtly refers to her partner Mummymon before his debut in the next episode.
  • The shot of Cody hitting a Gokimon with a spoon was removed from the English dub. But it was shown on the Fox Kids TV Spot.
  • Two shots are removed from the English dub showing ExVeemon being drilled in the stomach and groin by Digmon whilst held by Stingmon.

Digimon references

  • When fighting the Roachmon, Cody points out that they are not being controlled. However, he mentions black gears, which were featured in the previous series, Digimon Adventure (and last seen in the episode Departure for a New Continent). Cody mentions the black gears only in the English dub.

Real-world references

Miscellaneous trivia

  • Davis announces the episode title in the Japanese episode.
  • A box on the shelf of the computer room that was previously labeled "Yukio", now reads "Yukiko".
  • In the English dub, when the DigiDestined write on the computer room chalkboard, their writing, which would normally be given in English, instead remains in Japanese.
  • In the English dub of this episode, the Roachmon are referred to by their Japanese name, "Gokimon", unlike the earlier episode Family Picnic.
  • This is one of the few episodes in the entire Digimon anime series to retain its original Japanese title in the English dub. The other is The Dark Gate.
