Ep50

Ep50

Episode recap for Joe's Battle.

Synopsis[]

Joe and Mimi, along with the friends they've collected, watch as Machinedramon's city dissolves. As they continue on, Mimi becomes tired, so Gekomon, Otamamon, and Frigimon look for food. As they're resting, Joe remembers that his brother, Jim Kido, told him that he didn't have to become a doctor if he didn't want to. He resolves to become a stronger and better person, rather than one that always screws up. When the group continues on, they arrive at a colorless and broken Primary Village. Hearing a harmonica, the group rushes toward the sound, thinking that it is Matt. When they find the source, however, they realize that it's Elecmon, who has become depressed. They ask him to join their group and when he hears that Patamon and T.K. have been fighting as well, he agrees. Joe asks Elecmon where he got the harmonica, and they are able to determine that Matt crossed the nearby lake with a swan boat. Joe decides to leave Mimi with the friends they have gathered in order to search for Matt, feeling that he must go alone to find where he fits in the group. Joe says that Matt was looking for the same thing, and he wants to know if he found it. Gomamon says that if Joe feels strongly about this, then it must be the right thing to do.

Meanwhile, after making a marker for the Numemon that died against Machinedramon, Tai's group continues up Spiral Mountain until Sora spots Piedmon's hideout. LadyDevimon, the commander of Piedmon's Nightmare Soldiers, volunteers to take care of the DigiDestined for Piedmon. She appears before the DigiDestined with tantalizing laugh, promising to give them "a nice long rest." Her seductive appearance and demeanor immediately inspires strong dislike and jealousy in Kari and Sora, and the DigiDestined's Digimon all swarm around LadyDevimon in an effort to take her town.

LadyDevimon proves to be a formidable opponent, simultaneously taking on and overpowering six Digimon—two Ultimates (Angewomon and Andromon) three Champions (Angemon, Kabuterimon, and Birdramon), and one Rookie (Agumon). She overwhelms Angewomon, Angemon, Kabuterimon, and Birdramon at once with a single blast of her Darkness Wave, knocking all of them back at once. Andromon manages to prevent LadyDevimon from pressing her advantage by attacking her with Spiral Sword, but LadyDevimon swats it aside effortlessly. Kabuterimon and Birdramon follow up with Mega Blaster and Meteor Wing, but she extinguishes the energy blasts with an elegant flick of her wrist, laughing and asking sarcastically if they're just pretending to attack her. Angemon then attacks LadyDevimon with Heaven's Knuckle, which she gracefully sidesteps. However, this leads her right into the path of Angewomon's Holy Arrow, which grazes her side. Growling in annoyance, LadyDevimon flies up to Angewomon and lands a vicious uppercut to Angewomon's chin that knocks the Angel Digimon back. Kabuterimon and Birdramon quickly come to Angewomon's aid by swarming LadyDevimon, but she again swats them aside without so much as a glance.

Agumon urges Tai to let him warp digivolve, but Tai refuses, saying that he needs to stay in reserve. When Izzy uses the Digimon Analyzer on LadyDevimon, Tai begins to look at the big picture and realizes the seriousness of the situation. Tai decided to have Sora Takenouchi and Takeru "T.K." Takaishi leave the battle to get Yamato "Matt" Ishida and the others while Angewomon and Kabuterimon would battle LadyDevimon, knowing that they need to plan ahead to avoid more innocent deaths and to defeat the strongest of the Dark Masters.

Angewomon volunteers to take on LadyDevimon and tells Angemon and Birdramon to leave LadyDevimon to her. However, it soon becomes evident that Angewomon is badly outmatched by LadyDevimon, who seems able to negate any theoretical advantage that Angewomon is supposed to enjoy against her as a Holy Digimon through superior combat skills and strategy. Angewomon fires another Holy Arrow, which LadyDevimon dodges by circling around Angewomon, laughing. This momentary distraction allows Angemon and Birdramon to leave, but LadyDevimon immediately lands a devastating dropkick on the small of Angewomon's back. Angewomon is sent crashing into a nearby cliff, cracking the rock surface and creating a small crater. LadyDevimon laughs mockingly while Angewomon clenches her first and shouts indignantly at LadyDevimon. Angewomon then erupts out of the crater and delivers a furious uppercut to LadyDevimon's chin. LadyDevimon quickly recovers and counters with a vicious body blow against Angewomon's abdomen. Gasping and shaking, Angewomon staggers back, hands balling into fists and teeth clenching as she tries to endure the pain. LadyDevimon taunts Angewomon further by striking up a battle pose with a battlecry of challenge.

LadyDevimon continues to thrash Angewomon with her superior battle-savvy, as well as by taunting Angewomon with mock flirtation and insults that provoke Angewomon into rushing recklessly into combat. LadyDevimon is able to easily overpower Angewomon in melee by countering Angeowmon's punches with spectacular moves like dropkicks, uppercuts, haymakers, and roundhouse kicks. At range, LadyDevimon uses her advantage in speed and acrobatic abilities to elegantly sidestep Angewomon's Holy Arrows, while Angewomon struggles against LadyDevimon's Darkness Wave, which tears through Angewomon's defenses and scorches her skin. While Angewomon is desperately scrambling to resist her attacks, LadyDevimon manages to catch Angewomon from behind, completely unawares. However, instead of finishing Angewomon off, LadyDevimon decides to toy with her rival further by grabbing the blonde angel's hair, yanking her up into the air, and swinging her around like a contestant at a hammer toss while insulting Angewomon's hairstyle. Angewomon screams from nausea and pain as she feels the roots of her hair being pulled from her scalp. Alarmed, Kabuterimon evolves into MegaKabuterimon to save Angewomon. With a final, mighty swing, LadyDevimon sends Angewomon hurtling uncontrollably through the air, but MegaKabuterimon manages to catch her mid-air. However, Angewomon angrily snaps at at her savior, yelling at him to stop interfering and stay out of her way.

Angewomon then shoots out from MegaKabuterimon's hand like a bullet and lands a hard slap on LadyDevimon's face, cursing and challenging her rival to bring it on. Not to be outdone, LadyDevimon slaps Angewomon back, triggering a slapping match in which the two rivals exchange a flurry of frenzied strikes against each other's cheeks in rapid succession. MegaKabuterimon is now relegated to watching the battle of feminine pride between Angewomon and LadyDevimon, which has become a bitter, somewhat comical cat fight between the two rivals. Tai, Izzy, Agumon, and Andromon were also infatuated with the fight, while Kari cheers on Angewomon to slap LadyDevimon harder.

LadyDevimon defeats Angewomon in their catfight with a brutal roundhouse kick that sends Angewomon hurtling to the ground, where she lands with a devastating crash so powerful that it sends up a billowing mushroom cloud of dust and creates an impact crater. LadyDevimon proclaims that the game is over and prepares to finish Angewomon off with her Darkness Spear. Stirring feebly and groaning in pain, Angewomon is forced to watch helplessly as LadyDevimon divebombs towards her, ready to impale her heart. However, MegaKabuterimon blocks LadyDevimon's Darkness Spear with his hard carapace at the last moment, saving Angewomon's life and breaking LadyDevimon's talons. Furious and unable to accept that her rival had defeated her in a one-on-one battle and forced her allies to save her life so many times, Angewomon again shouts at MegaKabuterimon to get out of the way. Angewomon then blasts LadyDevimon with Heaven's Charm while LadyDevimon is still distracted from the pain of having her nail broken by MegaKabuterimon's interception. LadyDevimon is finally defeated, crying out Piedmon's name. However, their brief celebration is cut short when Piedmon arrives. Agumon warp digivolves to WarGreymon, but Tai knows that everyone is needed for this battle.

Quotes[]

Mimi: "Boy, just when you think it can’t get any weirder! It's like the whole city is moving out of town!"
Joe: "And I thought it was tough packing for camp."

—Mimi and Joe watch as Machinedramon's city gets reconfigured.

Gomamon: "Tai must have defeated another Dark Master."
Palmon: "There can't be too many of them left. We're almost home free"
Ogremon: "You think so huh? Well, the toughest one's still out there."
Frigimon: "Piedmon, the worst of the worst!"
Meramon: "He's the darkest of the Dark Masters."
Mimi: "Well, like rain on our parade, why don't you."

Mimi and Joe's new allies worry about the fight with Piedmon.

"I wonder if superheroes are listed in the phone book."

Joe tries to figure out an easier way of defeating Piedmon.

Gomamon: "Joe, why is it we're always walking uphill?"
[Later]
Sora: "Ever notice how we're always walking uphill?"

—Gomamon and Sora independently make the same observation.

Mimi: "Wow! Everybody's being so nice. So sweet."
Palmon: "It must be because of your charming personality!"
[...]
Ogremon: "Somthing tells me we should just nod our heads and go along."
Meramon: "Yeah, right."

—Good call guys.

"Yeah, good old Joe. You can always rely on him to fall into the mud or off a cliff. Well, not anymore! It's time for a brand new Joe!"

Joe is gaining some self-confidence.

"Pretty depressing, unless you're a big fan of charcoal."

Joe’s impression of Primary Village after the Dark Masters took over.

Sora: "See? I told you we were close."
Tai: "We'll give you a medal later."

—With Piedmon so close, Tai doesn't want to waste time on "I-told-you-so"'s.

Sora: "We should've known there'd be a welcoming committee."
Kari: "She looks like a witch."

—Sora and Kari are openly disgusted by LadyDevimon.

"The time's come to stop acting like a bunch of children. We're facing the last of the Dark Masters. [...] We don't know where he'll strike, or when, but it'll be somewhere close by... and soon. And he's strong, we know that. Real strong. This won't be just another fight. This one's for keeps. We've got to be ready for him. [...] All we've been doing is meeting each threat as it comes, barely holding on. Now we've got to put it all together, as a team. That means Matt, Mimi, and Joe too. We've let enough Digimon sacrifice themselves for us. It's our turn now."

Tai has finally become a true leader, realising the importance of battle strategy.

"Oops, sorry, blondie!"

LadyDevimon mocks Angewomon after landing a kick to Angewomon's back and sending her crashing into a nearby cliff.

Joe: "They don't call me 'Old Reliable' for nothing."
Gomamon: "But they don't."
Joe: "I'll ignore that."

—Joe tries to convince Mimi to let him look for Matt on his own.

"Never did like that bleached look!"

LadyDevimon insults Angewomon's blonde hair as she swings Angewomon around like a rag doll by her hair.

MegaKabuterimon: "Gotcha!"
Angewomon: "Let me go, let me at her!"

Angewomon loses her cool fighting LadyDevimon.

Tai: "Wow... Look at 'em go!"
Izzy: "I know I shouldn't watch this but... I can't take my eyes off!"
Kari: "Get her, Angewomon! That's right, knock that witch's block off! Go!"

—Tai and Izzy are transfixed by the catfight between Angewomon and LadyDevimon, while Kari tells Angewomon to let LadyDevimon have it.

"Enough of this!"

LadyDevimon decides that she has had enough of the catfight between her and Angewomon and ends their slapping match with a roundhouse kick that knocks Angewomon to the ground, leaving her helpless and stunned.

"This game is over! You're grounded, goldilocks!

LadyDevimon prepares to finish off Angewomon with her Darkness Spear.

LadyDevimon: "Aaargh! YOU BROKE IT!!"
MegaKabuterimon: "Awwww....send me the bill!"

—How are you gonna pay it, MegaKabuterimon? With DigiDollars?

"You're right, LadyDevimon. This game is over."

Angewomon recovers her composure before defeating LadyDevimon with Heaven's Charm.

"I'm melting!"

LadyDevimon’s last words. Apparently, she's a fan of The Wizard of Oz.

WarGreymon: "I'm ready."
Tai: "Remember, he's strong, we don't even know how strong."
WarGreymon: "No problem. At this rate, I'm only worried about dying of old age."

WarGreymon comments on Piedmon’s walking speed.

"We're gonna need everybody for this one. TK and Sora, Mimi and our Digimon allies, and Matt, and good Old Reliable Joe."

— Hey! The nickname is catching on!

Other notes[]

Animation errors

  • When Palmon and Gomamon are talking to each other as the city is liberated, the strap of Mimi's bag is the same color as her dress.
  • When Mimi and Joe's group turn around, the strap of Mimi's bag becomes the same color as her dress for a brief moment, and Ogremon has red bands on both of his legs.
  • When Sora and T.K. leave, Birdramon is first shown with her mouth entirely orange.
  • When speaking to Elecmon, during one shot, Joe's shirt is clearly a darker tone.
  • In a shot of the Digimon group by the beach, Ogremon has red bands on both legs.
  • During Kabuterimon's digivolution into MegaKabuterimon in the English dub, just before Kabuterimon actually Digivolves, MegaKabuterimon's original Japanese name, "AtlurKabuterimon", can be seen in the background for a split second.

Dubbing changes

  • Sora and Kari look disdainfully at LadyDevimon in both versions, though in the English dub it is only because of her appearance. In the original, it's because the first thing she says translates to, "Welcome, you adorable little boys!"
  • Angewomon calls LadyDevimon a "witch" in the English dub, instead of a "bitch" in the Japanese version.
  • When Angewomon and LadyDevimon are slapping each other, the actual slaps are removed from the English dub.
  • In the original version, LadyDevimon cries "Lord Piedmon" before being defeated.

Real-world references

  • When Mimi and Joe arrive at Primary Village, Joe says that it looks like "an old Twilight Zone episode".
  • LadyDevimon shouts "I'm melting!", a second reference in the series to the movie The Wizard of Oz (after Myotismon in the episode "Wizardmon's Gift").

Miscellaneous trivia

  • LadyDevimon announces the episode title in the Japanese episode.
  • The English dub episode title is the second (and last) of the season to feature the name of a DigiDestined, the other being "Sora's Crest of Love".
