Koichi Kimura (木村 輝一 Kimura Kōichi?), is a fictional character in the anime series Digimon Frontier. He's one of the "DigiDestined", children who were chosen to receive the ability to transform into Digimon in order to save the Digital World, although he was originally brainwashed to fight as one of Cherubimon's evil warriors.

AppearanceEdit

He has dark blue eyes and black hair that is parted to the sides of his face. He wears grey pants with a red long-sleeved shirt under a short-sleeved green button-up that is left open, and green sneakers with yellow streaks.

DescriptionEdit

He is Koji Minamoto's twin brother and the elder of the twins. Their parents divorced when they were very young, and neither twin could remember the other. His mother never told him about his brother and Koichi only learned about Koji when his grandmother told him on her deathbed. Koichi, feeling that his mother had enough to worry about, didn't tell her that he knew he had a brother, so he went out to find Koji on his own.

After finding out where he lived, Koichi started to periodically watch Koji and his folks, yearning to meet his newfound brother, but never able to bring himself to interrupt the seemingly happy family. Overtime, deep in his heart, Koichi began to grow bitter that their father had abandoned him and their mother, whom Koichi worried for as she worked long, hard hours despite the fact that she was unwell. On the same day that the rest of the DigiDestined were eventually gathered and brought to the Digital World, he decided he would meet Koji, and followed him to the train station. Koichi found himself running to catch up with Koji, but he lost his footing and fell down a flight of stairs, collapsing as a result.

Koichi was soon after taken to an isolated sector in the Digital World where he met Cherubimon, who, after sensing the sadness and darkness that resided in his heart, enticed him to join his cause. He erased Koichi's memories and gave him the corrupted Human Spirit of Darkness to give him a semi-physical form as Duskmon. His memories lay dormant until he found himself face to face with Koji for the first time. Slowly, overtime he began to remember bits of his past, however, this caused him great pain and distress, and he found himself out of rage and confusion pursuing and attacking Koji periodically. This continued until Ophanimon's power intercepted one of his attacks and triggered all of his memories to return. Cherubimon would later gain influence over Duskmon's actions one last time before Koji finally freed Koichi from his control. After this, Koichi would come to realize and accept that the powers of darkness didn't have to be evil if he chose not to view them as such, and henceforth wielded the newly purified Spirits of Darkness, fighting alongside his brother and the other DigiDestined.

Later on, Koichi began to realize that, in reality, he was not truly in the Digital World. On multiple occasions, the DigiDestined were seriously hurt, revealing their Fractal Code, which all viable beings within the digital world possess. However, each time, Koichi was far less injured and appeared to not have a Fractal Code. At some point, Crusadermon informed him that he was a spirit within the Digital World and this troubled him for the rest of the season. Bokomon overheard with Crusadermon said and, even though he promised Koichi that he wouldn't tell anyone, told the other DigiDestined about it. Ironically this did not include Koji, because at the time Koichi was talking to Koji and they were out of ear shot. It eventually becomes apparent that Koichi's mind had somehow arrived in the digital world after he'd lost consciousness in the real world. As the final battles with Lucemon ensued, Koichi sacrificed himself to save the other DigiDestined, giving his spirits of darkness to his brother, Koji. The powers of light and darkness begin to react within Koji's body, helping trigger Koji and Takuya's final evolution into Susanoomon.

In the final episode it is revealed by Loweemon that Koichi is still alive but is badly hurt. The other DigiDestined returned to the real world to find Koichi comatose and barely alive in the emergency room where doctors and nurses were desperately trying to revive him, but Koji's tears and everyone's D-Tectors were able to bring him out of his coma. In the epilogue it shows that he happily manages to reunite Koji with their mother, and also the twins visited their sick biological mother often at her home.

MusicEdit

Koichi has three theme songs: the vocal "Oreta Tsubasa de -With Broken Wings-", the instrumental "Yami no Theme" (闇のテーマ? lit. "Theme of Darkness"), and the English only Darkness in My Heart". A version of his Spirit Evolution and fractal code digitize speech appears on Digimon Frontier: Christmas Smile as "Spirit Evolution!! ~Kōichi-hen~". He speaks the "From Kōichi to Kōji..." track in the CD drama, Digimon Frontier Original Story: Things That Want To Be Told.

From a franchise standpoint, Koichi is a part of the Spirit Singers, a group composed of his fellow DigiDestined from Digimon Frontier. They debut in the Digimon Frontier: Christmas Smile album.

Digimon FormsEdit

As Duskmon, Koichi has no memory of his past until he almost killed Koji during their first two confrontations. Hearing Koji's name being said over and over gave Duskmon great pain. After this, Duskmon fought Koji in order to learn the connection between them. Cherubimon gave him his Beast Spirit to become Velgemon but Ophanimon restored Koichi's memories, freeing him from his Spirits' control, but not from the influence of Cherubimon. It wasn't until Koji purified the defeated Duskmon that Koichi was free from Cherubimon's control.

After realizing that darkness does not equate to evil, Koichi transformed his Spirits into the Spirits of Darkness without evil, with which he channels AncientSphinxmon's true power. While his twin brother, Koji, was the "Wolf of Light", Koichi was the "Lion of Darkness".

Furthermore, whenever Koichi Spirit Evolves, his fractal code takes noticeably longer to appear compared to the other five Good Warriors, possibly due to the fact that his body isn't present in the Digital World.

There are a series of toys where Koichi can digivolve to Loweemon and JagerLoweemon; the two of them can then combine into Rhihimon for a pseudo-Fusion Evolution.

DuskmonEdit

One of Cherubimon's evil warriors, Duskmon can transform other Digimon's regret into dark energy. An expert swordsman with the blades he can extend from his forearms, the source of his power is sealed in his armor's three necks and seven eyeballs. He killed Arbormon after saying he was worthless without his Beast Spirit and then absorbed his Fractal code.

Attacks

  • Deadly Gaze (Geist Abend, Deu: "Ghost/Spirit Evening"): Projects energy beams from his hands and the assorted eyeballs on his body.
  • Lunar Plasma (Eroberung, Deu: "Conquest"): He raises and lowers his swords forming a red moon and then rushes at his enemy, slicing them.

VelgemonEdit

Called Velgmon in the Japanese version, Cherubimon gives Duskmon the Beast Spirit of Darkness and the ability to slide evolve to Velgemon in order to 'free' him from his humanity. From his appearance, he is called "The Devourer of the Dead". Duskmon hates changing into this form unless it is necessary. He is so powerful that only a combination of Aldamon and Beowulfmon is powerful enough to stand up to him. It's named after Hræsvelgr who guarded the Underworld in Norse mythology.

Attacks

  • Dark Obliteration (Zone Deleter): Using his wing, he draws a circle on the ground then a ball forms destroying anything in it.
  • Dark Vortex (Master of Darkness): Fires a laser from his middle eye.

LoweemonEdit

Using the true Human Spirit of Darkness, Koichi becomes Loweemon. Strongly holding the power of AncientSphinxmon, he wields the ancient Digimon's tail and head as his spear which is known as the Spear of Conviction and his Sphinx Guard Shield.

The name originates from the German word for "lion".

Koichi fights in this form in Digimon Battle Spirit 2.

Attacks

  • Shadow Meteor (Endlich Meteor, Deu: "Final Meteor"): Gathers energy in the jaws of the lion head on his chest and releases a burst of energy.
  • Shadow Lance (Ewig Schlaf, Deu: "Eternal Sleep"): Raises his spear, spinning it and gathering momentum and then dashes forward, thrusting his spear forward.

JagerLoweemonEdit

The word Jäger, Kaiser, and Loewe have German origins. Jäger means hunter, Kaiser means Emperor, Löwe means Lion.

Using the Beast Spirit of Darkness, Koichi becomes JagerLoweemon. Koichi was the second person, aside from Zoe Orimoto, to be able to control their beast spirit without challenge. The reason Koichi was able to control his Beast Spirit so fast and easy was because of his desire to protect his brother.

This is Koichi's digivolution in Digimon Battle Spirit 2.

Attacks

  • Ebony Blast (Schwarz Donner,[3] Deu: "Black Thunder"): Releases a burst of dark energy as the pistons on his back recoil and can continue releasing bursts.
  • Dark Master (Schwarz König,[3] Deu: "Black King"): Leaps forward as the gems on his body glow and unleashes a giant burst of dark energy in the shape of a black lion, slicing straight through his enemies.

RhihimonEdit

Rhihimon is Koichi's Fusion Hybrid form.

The Hybrid-Digivolving Figures: Loweemon and Hybrid-Digivolving Figures: KaiserLeomon toys are molded over Koichi bases, which, when combined with each other, form Rhihimon for a sort of Fusion Evolution.

Notes and ReferencesEdit

  1. Koichi never reaches Rhihimon in the anime or other media. However, the Hybrid-Digivolving Figures: Loweemon and Hybrid-Digivolving Figures: KaiserLeomon toys are molded over Koichi bases, which, when combined with each other, form Rhihimon for a sort of Fusion Evolution. It is listed here for completion.
  2. Digimon Battle Spirit 2.
  3. 3.0 3.1 While the correct German translation for "black" in this situation would be "Schwarzer", the Japanese name for the attack pronounces it simply as "Schwarz".
