Synopsis[]

Following BlackWarGreymon disobeying their order, Arukenimon and Mummymon are on a chase after the Mega level Digimon to take him back under their control, as BlackWarGreymon continue through the dark forest of the Digital World without purpose. Though many Digimon are afraid of his presence, BlackWarGreymon doesn't harm them, but simply passes by and continues his journey.

Back at the real world, the DigiDestined and their Digimon are discussing the plan before they can confront BlackWarGreymon again. Knowing that they are currently at a disadvantage in power level due to having only one Ultimate level DNA Digivolution on their team, DemiVeemon suggest that the rest of the Digimon should also pair up to DNA Digivolve as well. During the discussion, Kari expresses her sympathy toward BlackWarGreymon for his lonely existence, which confuses Yolei but impresses Davis, who compares Kari's kindness to Yolei's bluntness and angers the latter. Before Yolei and Davis can get into another fight, T.K. suggests that instead of fighting over nothing, they all should just go to the Digital World to find and stop BlackWarGreymon himself. Agreeing with T.K.'s words, Davis states they can also put Arukeniemon out of business by destroying the Control Spires and asks Kari if she’s with them. Kari, despite some obvious unease and sadness on her part that Yolei, T.K., and Cody have all noticed, reluctantly says she is. DemiVeemon who jumps on Davis in joy, also says he’s with Davis as he is ready for another battle against their adversary, though Yolei is still worried as she begins to believe that Davis's words may be right: Kari is much better in understanding people's feeling than her, and that perhaps the two of them are too different to truly comprehend each other's way of thinking.

The DigiDestined arrives at the same dark forest that BlackWarGreymon previously was, searching around for clue regarding his whereabouts. As they're walking through the area, Gatomon realizes that this is the location that she lost her tail ring back when she was escaping from an Unimon controlled by a Dark Ring. Hearing Gatomon's words, Davis suggests the team to change the course of plan to search for her tail ring, so that they can empower her offensive ability, impressing Kari and causing the rest to tease him for being successful in gaining her favor. Nevertheless, everyone agrees with him and begins the search, though Davis is a bit dismayed that Kari decides to partner with Yolei this time, earning another tease from Veemon.

Meanwhile, Ken and Wormmon arrive at the area, with both of them are clearly unease with the surroundings. As Ken gazes farther away, he sees the forest transforms into the Dark Ocean and remembers the time when his Digivice transformed into his dark D-3, and screams out in pain. Ken's voice is heard by Kari, who quickly rush towards him along with Yolei and their Digimon. While Kari tries to calm him down, Ken explains to everyone that he saw a vision of the Dark Ocean, which shocks Kari. Despite being skeptical about Ken's claim, Yolei chooses to play along so that he can be more at ease. Unknown to them, a dark barrier slowly surrounds them as they all walk away deeper into the forest. At the same time, Davis' team is unfruitful in searching for Gatomon's tail ring. They, however, start noticing Yolei's team unnatural movement, and decide to rush toward them before it's too late.

After Yolei and Kari successfully calm down Ken, they realize that they've wandered off too far and are now lost. As Yolei starts to become desperate, she notices Davis and Veemon in the distance, searching for them, and tells everyone to run toward the two. Yolei, however, is shocked that Davis somehow runs to pass through her, literally, without even seeing her despite the fact that he appears to still be able to hear her voice. Davis and Veemon soon rejoins with the other four and decides to expand the search area.

With no way to communicate with the rest of their teammates, Yolei's team continue deeper in the forest, hoping to find the way out. Seeing that the situation is getting more tense, Yolei tries to lift up everyone's spirit by suggesting some games, though she is annoyed when she witnesses that Kari and Ken are in their own world and ignoring her, and decides that since they don't want her to be here with them then she will find a way out herself, though Yolei soon calms down and realizes that she is being selfish and is hurting her friends' feelings. Yolei and Hawkmon eventually reach the end of the forest and find a deep gorge with something shiny at the bottom, which they and the rest believe to be Gatomon's tail ring. As Ken begins to have a deep thought about him being unable to help anyone, Yolei decides to climb down to check out the item. However, the rock under Yolei's foot breaks down and almost causes her to fall, but Kari grabs her hand in time. Before Kari could pull Yolei up, she and Ken see a gigantic wave appear in the gorge, cause both of them to scream and Kari to slip and fall down with Yolei, with Hawkmon and Gatomon quickly following their partners.

At the bottom of the gorge, Yolei has regained consciousness, much to the three's relief. Yolei is soon disappointed when Gatomon reveals that the item they have found is a broken Dark Ring, though everyone manages to cheer her up, while Hawkmon decides to Digivolve to Aquilamon so that he can get everyone up. However, Hawkmon somehow fails to Digivolve and causes Yolei to become even more hysterical. This cause Kari to snap and slap Yolei, much to the shock of Hawkmon and Gatomon. Realizing what she has done, Kari apologizes to Yolei and, as Hawkmon and Gatomon go up to get them something to climb up on, reveals she is envious of Yolei's expressive personality and being true to herself, something that she lacks as she keeps everything inside so nobody gets hurt but her, which is why the World of Darkness keeps calling for her like it did Ken. Yolei denies that Kari is like Ken, but Kari says they are alike: they keep too much of their true selves repressed, which makes both of them vulnerable to the Darkness. Gatomon and Hawkmon send down some vines to climb up on.

After the four are back with Ken, Yolei informs him about the Dark Ring she found, though she also erratically tries to explain that it isn't his fault, which cheers up Ken and Kari. Unfortunately for them, the moment is short-lived as Kari starts to hear the voice of the waves and runs along the cliff to the source. At the edge of the forest, Kari sees the Dark Ocean manifests in front of her, which Ken also sees but not Yolei. Annoyed that only she cannot see the Dark Ocean, Yolei lets out a voice of frustration, causing the ominous place to appear in her vision as well. Feeling strange about the situation, Ken begins to realize that they may be at the Dark Ocean, causing Yolei to remember Izzy's words about the power that has been protecting the Digital World is weakening, and something even worse will be coming soon in the future.

The action of Yolei's group is observed by Arukenimon and Mummymon, who notice that the kids have stumbled into a phase warp that makes them an easy target to get rid of. Since the two of them have a mission on hands, Arukenimon uses the nearby Control Spires to create a gigantic Blossommon to deal with them as she and Mummymon continues their search of BlackWarGreymon.

Kari begins to lose her composure as she remembers evil creatures trying to pull her deep into the Dark Ocean's depths in her last visit, but Yolei reminds her not to give up hope. Just then, Blossomon appears in front of them, causing a hole in space to appear, allowing Wormmon and Hawkmon to Digivolve to Stingmon and Aquilamon. Kari and Gatomon decide to join the battle, but Kari begins hearing the Darkness call for her, which causes her to drop her Digivice as she feels herself being swallowed by her own inner darkness, totally terrifying her. Yolei and Gatomon try their best to help her as Stingmon and Aquilamon attack Blossomon, but Blossomon simply knocks them down. Kari trembles and cries in despair. Yolei tells Kari she has to tell her that what’s wrong, or she can’t help. Kari cries that the Darkness that’s both inside her and in the world won’t leave her alone, and that she feels she’s not strong enough to fight it off and as such it will beat her.

Yolei slaps Kari back to her senses and tells her that the darkness will never beat her, and that they will battle it together. Kari thanks Yolei for helping her snap out of it. Just then, a bright light comes out of the sky and surrounds Yolei and Kari. Yolei and Gatomon remind Kari that she has the power to eliminate the darkness, to which Kari agrees. This causes both Aquilamon and Gatomon to DNA Digivolve to Silphymon, who easily defeats Blossomon. The blast alerts Davis' group as Yolei's group returns from the Dark Ocean back to where they were originally, with Silphymon reverting to Salamon and Pururumon.

After the two groups reunite, Ken leaves for home, and the others do the same. Kari assures T.K. that she won't be fighting the darkness alone thanks to Yolei.

Quotes[]

Gatomon: "I couldn't look for my ring back then, but if I had it now, I'd be one tough digi-kitty."
Davis: "That's it then! We'll just have to go find it, whatever it is!"
Kari: "You're the greatest!"
Cody: "Trying to win points with Kari? Looks like it actually worked this time."
Yolei: "Not even Davis can strike out every time."
Davis: "Oh yes I can!"
Veemon: "I don't think that's what you meant to say."

—The DigiDestined are onto Davis.

"My life is over! I'll never get married, have kids, make millions in the stock market! I hate this!"

Yolei, snap out of it!

Kari: "Yolei, I'm really sorry for slapping you like that. It's just not like me. You seem to bring out the worst in me, maybe because we're so different."
Yolei: "No, it's me."
Kari: "I have to be honest, Yolei. The truth is, I envy you."
Yolei: "Huh?"
Kari: "I wish I could say what I'm feeling, like you do. I keep everything inside so no one gets hurt but me."
Yolei: "I had no idea."

Kari: "Maybe that’s why I was drawn into the World of Darkness just like Ken."
Yolei: "Ken? You’re not like Ken."
Kari: "We keep too much inside, making us vulnerable."

—Kari expresses herself to Yolei.

"That's enough of that nonsense! Of course you're strong enough! You're the strongest person I've ever known! And if you think I'm gonna sit by and let you run on yourself like that, you can just think again! We'll fight it together, Kari. The darkness will never beat you, do you hear me?!"

Yolei finally gets through to Kari.

T.K.: "I thought I'd really lost you this time. I was afraid you'd slipped into the other world for good."
Kari: "Don't worry, T.K. I have a feeling I won't be fighting it alone anymore. Yolei won't let me."

—Kari reassures T.K. that she's not going anywhere now that Yolei is with her.

Other notes[]

Animation errors

Miscellaneous trivia

  • Gatomon and Silphymon announce the episode title in the Japanese episode.
  • While reading Silphymon's Digimon Analyser, Paul St. Peter's voice lacks Stingmon's vibrato effect, causing it to sound more like Leomon, who he also voiced.
